The Whipping Man "Amputee" Chaise
In "The Whipping Man" by Matthew Lopez, the character of Caleb has his left leg amputated between scenes. This meant a special couch would have to be built for him to hide his leg in for most of the show.
The "Before" picture of the Chaise.
The arm was removed and a large wooden box was built in place of padding and springs. It was padded for actor comfort. A hole was cut to allow the actor to slip his foot inside.
Side view of the hole and padding. Padding was adjusted both inside and out with actor input to ensure maximum comfort.
The upholstered chaise.
Added staining and distress.
Another angle of staining and distress.
Production photo. Actor credits: Jarrod M. Smith (left) as John, Adam Haas Hunter (center) as Caleb, and Charlie Robinson (right) as Simon.
The Journey of the Chaise
One of the things I love to do is reupholster furniture that I have already upholstered for a previous show. I love how something as simple as changing fabric can make a piece take on an entirely new life. Here are process photos from "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "You, Nero", which starred the same chaise.
